This is a quick and easy way to paint and render a decorative font to give it a 3D effect. This tutorial is designed for Paint Shop Pro 6 and ultilizes the inner bevel effect. To get started you will need to download the font that I am using as an example.

Click on the link at the left for Sassy Rose's decorative fonts. Click on Dingbats. Select the Folk Art 2 font and download the zipped file. Unzip the file to your windows font folder.
This is what we plan to create using the Folk Art 2 decorative font pattern E upper case. To keep this simple we will be working with 3 basic colors only (red blue green).
Step 1: Open your PSP6. Go to File and cick on New. Set your new image dialog box to width 300, height 300, background color white, 16 million colors. Click ok.
Step 2: Click on the Text tool and place the cursor where you want your font to appear and click to open the Text Dialog box. The entries for the Text Dialog box should be set as follows: font name Folk Art 2, font size 150, create as: selection and antialias should be checked. Type the upper case letter E in the text box and you should have your selection. Click ok. Click on the Paint Can and open the tool box. Select solid color. With your font still selected on your canvas, pick a very light beige color to paint your font. Click anywhere inside of the selection for this and then go to your Selection tool at the top of your screen and click on Select None. You now have an image that looks similar to the one at the left.
Step 3: Now we are ready to paint our light beige image. Click on the Magic Wand tool to select and holding down your shift key click inside each part of the flower in your design. Click on the Paint Can and select the red color and click inside one of your selected parts of your flower to paint. Go to Selections and click on Select None. Now the first pieces of your image are painted.

Step 4 and 5: Repeat Step 3 for the remaining parts of your image. You should have a progression similar to the examples below.
Step 6: Now that you have painted all of the image you are ready to change the plain flat look to an exciting 3D look. Click on the Magic Wand and with the wand click inside the white background to select. Go to Selections and click on Invert. Now only your image is selected. Click on Images to open the Images pull down menu. Click on Effects to open the Effects pull down menu. Click on Inner Bevel to open the Inner Bevel dialog box. Use the screen capture below of the Inner Bevel dialog box for your settings. Once you have set all the settings to match the example click ok. Your Inner Bevel selections will now load onto your image. Your image is still selected so you will need to go to Selections in the top tool bar and open the pull down menu and click on Select None. You now have a finished 3D image made from a decorative font. You can also experiment with the Inner Bevel settings to get the effect you like the best.
